Letters and manuscript, ca. 1861-1895.

Collection includes thirty five letters and cards, mostly to unnamed correspondents, and a 13 p. essay entitled "Quelques-unes de mes idees sur la peinture," (n.d.). The letters contain some mention of work on paintings for the Salon, a trip to Brittany, and illustrations for books, including his own writings. Of particular interest are one letter addressed to a critic for the journal "XIXe siecle" taking him to task for a general insensitivity to the work exhibited at the Salon; one letter of 1877 addressed to "Monsieur le Directeur" regarding Breton's disappointment at the rumored sale of "La Glaneuse" to the Musee de Lille rather than to the Luxembourg; and one letter of 1882 concerning the painting "Jeune fille" bought by Vandendonck. Printed matter includes several reproductions of Breton's work, an obituary, and portraits of Breton.
